Overview

Tour Overview

The Birdwatching & Wetland Classic is a carefully curated journey designed for wildlife enthusiasts, birdwatchers, and photographers who want to immerse themselves in Sri Lanka’s rich southern ecosystems. Over five days, this tour takes you through the island’s most vibrant wetlands, lagoons, and coastal bird habitats, offering a combination of guided canoe rides, walking safaris, and photographic opportunities.

Starting from the south coast, you’ll explore Koggala Lagoon, a serene mangrove system dotted with cinnamon islands and traditional stilt-fishing spots. Here, the mornings are filled with the vibrant calls of kingfishers, herons, and cormorants, while the calm waters provide perfect reflections for photography. Moving eastward, the hidden gem of Lunama–Kalametiya Lagoon awaits, a lesser-known but spectacular birding hotspot where flamingos, black-winged stilts, terns, and endemic rails thrive in freshwater marshes.

The centerpiece of the tour is Bundala National Park, one of Sri Lanka’s most famous Ramsar wetlands. On full-day safaris, you’ll encounter hundreds of migratory and resident birds, including painted storks, pelicans, spoonbills, and various waders. Expert guides will help you identify species, capture stunning photographs, and explain the ecological importance of this unique wetland ecosystem.

Your journey continues to Kumana National Park, known for its lagoons, tidal rivers, and coastal forests. Here, the diversity of wetland birds is unparalleled, providing both dramatic photographic opportunities and intimate encounters with nature. Evening sessions allow reflection on the day’s sightings and conservation discussions, making the tour as educational as it is immersive.

This tour is strictly focused on the southern wetlands, avoiding long-distance transfers to northern or eastern regions like Anawilundawa, Mannar, Jaffna, or Trincomalee. However, for those who wish to extend their journey beyond the south, customized extensions can be arranged, adding extra days, accommodations, and travel logistics as required.

Designed for specialist travelers who value depth over breadth, this birdwatching and wetland classic combines tranquil natural beauty, hands-on wildlife observation, and expert guidance, ensuring that every moment is filled with discovery and inspiration. Whether you’re a seasoned birder, a wildlife photographer, or a nature lover seeking immersive experiences, this tour delivers a rare glimpse into the hidden avian treasures of southern Sri Lanka.
