Sri Lanka offers surfing year-round because it has a double coastline, and there are two surf seasons. The east coast, including Arugam Bay and the surrounding areas, has its peak surf season from May to October with regular swells and world-class right-hand point breaks. While that, the south and southwest coasts with favorite surf destinations like Weligama, Mirissa, and Hiriketiya are perfect for surfing between November and April when the waves are clean and conditions are ideal. Seasonality ensures that no matter what time of the year it is, Sri Lanka always has an awesome surf destination in store for you.
Sri Lanka has some of the best surfing spots in the world that cater to surfers of all levels. Arugam Bay, located on the east coast, is Sri Lanka’s surfing hub and is best for intermediate to advanced surfers between May and October. On the south coast, Weligama is a paradise for beginners, with gentle, rolling waves and plenty of surf schools, so it’s the ideal spot for longboarding between November and April. Nearby, Hiriketiya, an idyllic little bay, is the spot for intermediate and experienced surfers. Mirissa, another favourite spot, is ideal for intermediate surfers. Hikkaduwa, located on the southwest coast, is ideal for intermediate and advanced surfers due to its vibrant surf town. Last but not least, Unawatuna has small, fun beach breaks, so it is an excellent choice for beginners and intermediates who wish to surf the waves while enjoying the stunning coastal views of the area.
