Minneriya National Park
Located in the North Central Province of Sri Lanka, Minneriya National Park is yet another popular wildlife destination in Sri Lanka. Despite its relatively modest size of 8,890 hectares, it has taken the world by storm because of the phenomenon referred to as ‘The Gathering’ – the largest congregation of Asian elephants in the world.
Why Visit Minneriya?

It’s safe to say that the Minneriya National Park is one of the top spots in Sri Lanka for elephant watching. The main reason is the spectacle that the elephants put up as they gather around the Minneriya Tank in search of food and water during the dry season (from August to September). The sight of these majestic creatures migrating, mingling and playing with one another is an extraordinary sight to behold and a true bucket-list experience. Even if you miss the Gathering, Minneriya is known for year-round sightings of roaming herds as it’s part of the elephant corridor connecting Kaudulla and Wasgamuwa National Parks.
Featuring wetlands, scrub forests and lush greenlands, the park is also home to a variety of wildlife, including leopards although sightings are very rare. In addition, sloth bears, spotted deer, buffalo and mongooses call Minneriya home along with 160+ bird species. These habitats don’t just support the wildlife but also create a stunning backdrop for your safari adventures.
Conveniently located near Sigiriya and other cultural landmarks, Minneriya is a must-visit for any Sri Lanka itinerary. The amazing mix of wildlife, natural beauty, and proximity to other attractions ensures an experience that’s both enriching and memorable.
