If you are a bird enthusiast, you must visit Kumana because it is a paradise for birdwatchers (no kidding)! Boasting over 255 bird species, Kumana’s diverse landscapes attract many migratory and resident birds, making it one of the best destinations in the country to spot and observe birds. On a good day, a keen birdwatcher can be rewarded with sightings of up to 100 species, even before sundown.

Among the many bird species you can find here are the likes of painted storks, pelicans, black-necked storks and spoonbills, to name a few. During peak migration seasons (from April to July), the park becomes even more attractive as it transforms into a lively spectacle with countless birds gracing the skies.

While Kumana is well-known for its birdlife, its charm isn’t limited to birds. Kumana is also home to leopards with an estimated 40 leopards roaming the park. In addition, elephants, sloth bears, wild boars, sambar deer and golden jackals can be found in this park.

Beyond wildlife, Kumana also offers a fascinating glimpse into Sri Lanka’s ancient past. Steeped in history, it houses ruins of ancient Buddhist meditation caves, crumbling stupas and inscriptions that speak of a bygone era and offer a fascinating glimpse into the spiritual life of ancient Sri Lanka.

Safe to say, Kumana offers a peaceful retreat where Sri Lanka’s wild beauty takes centre stage and nature and history coexist harmoniously. And for those seeking a quieter, more authentic wildlife experience, Kumana National Park delivers in every way.
