Overview

Destination Overview

Yala National Park, stretching across the Southern and Uva Provinces, is the crown jewel of Sri Lanka’s wildlife sanctuaries. Established in 1938, it covers nearly 980 square kilometers, making it the country’s second-largest national park. Yala is celebrated as one of the best places in the world to spot leopards in the wild, with the highest leopard density globally recorded here.

The park’s landscapes are diverse, ranging from arid scrublands and dry monsoon forests to freshwater lakes, wetlands, and the dramatic Indian Ocean coastline. This mosaic of habitats supports an astonishing range of wildlife. While the leopard is Yala’s star attraction, the park is also home to large herds of elephants, sloth bears, crocodiles, jackals, and spotted deer. Birdlife thrives here too, with more than 200 recorded species including peacocks, painted storks, and rare raptors.

One of Yala’s defining features is its combination of wilderness and history. Within the park are ancient ruins and shrines, including Sithulpawwa Rajamaha Viharaya, a Buddhist monastery dating back over 2,000 years. Pilgrims and travelers alike are drawn to its serene setting atop rocky outcrops, offering sweeping views of the park’s wilderness.

Yala is divided into five blocks, with Block I being the most visited due to its high density of leopard sightings. The park’s water sources—such as the Menik River and scattered reservoirs—create ideal viewing opportunities as animals gather to drink, particularly during the dry season. Alongside jeep safaris, Yala also offers a unique chance to experience nature near unspoiled beaches, where jungle meets ocean.

Despite its wild beauty, Yala is sensitive to over-visitation. Responsible travel practices—such as limiting jeep numbers, respecting wildlife boundaries, and supporting eco-friendly lodges—ensure the park’s treasures are preserved for future generations. For travelers seeking the thrill of raw nature, Yala provides one of Sri Lanka’s most unforgettable experiences.
