Overview

Destination Overview

Sinharaja, meaning “Lion Kingdom”, is Sri Lanka’s most famous rainforest and a UNESCO-designated Biosphere Reserve and World Heritage Site. Stretching across the southern and central hill country, the forest covers around 11,000 hectares and is home to some of the richest biodiversity in South Asia.

The rainforest is renowned for its dense vegetation, towering tropical trees, and a constant chorus of birdcalls and insect songs. More than 60% of the trees are endemic, and the forest harbors numerous medicinal plants, orchids, and giant lianas. For wildlife enthusiasts, Sinharaja is a treasure trove—27 of Sri Lanka’s 33 endemic bird species can be spotted here, including the Sri Lanka blue magpie, red-faced malkoha, and Sri Lanka spurfowl. Mammals such as purple-faced langurs, giant squirrels, and rare leopards also roam these forests, though sightings are rare.

Sinharaja is also famous for its unique bird flocks: unlike most forests, birds here often move in mixed-species flocks, offering birdwatchers spectacular opportunities. Butterflies, amphibians, and reptiles are equally abundant, with many species found nowhere else on Earth.

For visitors, the rainforest offers guided trekking trails of varying lengths, leading to hidden waterfalls, canopy viewpoints, and crystal-clear streams. Trekking here is more than just a hike—it’s an immersion into an ancient ecosystem that feels alive with color, sound, and mystery. Sinharaja is not just a forest—it is a living laboratory and sanctuary, preserving what remains of Sri Lanka’s original tropical rainforest.
