Destination Overview
The Knuckles Mountain Range, named for its resemblance to a clenched fist, rises dramatically in Sri Lanka’s Central Highlands, covering parts of Matale and Kandy districts. Recognized as part of the UNESCO Central Highlands World Heritage Site, this vast wilderness is one of the island’s most biodiverse regions, home to unique cloud forests, cascading streams, and an array of endemic flora and fauna.
Known locally as Dumbara Kanduvetiya or “Misty Mountains,” the Knuckles are a haven for nature enthusiasts and adventurers. The landscape is marked by rugged peaks, deep valleys, waterfalls, and forested slopes that shift between evergreen forests, montane grasslands, and dry-zone woodlands. Over 34 peaks rise above 1,000 meters, with the highest reaching over 1,800 meters, offering hikers panoramic views of distant plains and villages nestled in the valleys.
The region is famed for its rich biodiversity. Scientists have recorded hundreds of species of plants, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and mammals, many of them endemic to Sri Lanka. Rare species such as the purple-faced langur, giant squirrels, and a variety of frogs and lizards thrive in this untouched ecosystem. Birdwatchers can also spot colorful endemics like the Sri Lanka blue magpie, Sri Lanka whistling thrush, and the yellow-eared bulbul.
Beyond its natural wonders, the Knuckles hold cultural and historical significance. The isolated villages within the range preserve traditional lifestyles, agriculture, and rituals passed down for generations. Hiking through these trails often brings encounters with terraced paddy fields, spice gardens, and villagers engaged in age-old farming practices.
For adventurers, the Knuckles offer some of the best trekking experiences in Sri Lanka. Trails range from easy walks through tea plantations and villages to challenging hikes that scale rugged summits or trace gushing rivers and hidden waterfalls. Popular routes include climbs to Mini World’s End for breathtaking views, the Dothalugala Peak trail, and treks to cascading waterfalls like Dumbara Ella.
Remote, mist-laden, and ecologically vital, the Knuckles Mountain Range is a living laboratory of nature and a sanctuary for those who seek the thrill of adventure amid pristine wilderness.
