Overview

Destination Overview

Katunayake, located in Sri Lanka’s Western Province just 30 km north of Colombo, plays a central role in the country’s connectivity. It is best known as the site of Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA), the largest and busiest airport in Sri Lanka. Almost every international traveler begins or ends their journey here, making Katunayake a crucial gateway rather than a traditional sightseeing stop.

Beyond aviation, Katunayake is also home to one of the country’s largest Free Trade Zones (FTZs), established in 1977. This industrial hub has been a major driver of Sri Lanka’s export economy, especially in textiles and manufacturing, giving the town a modern, business-focused atmosphere.

Although Katunayake itself is not packed with attractions, its strategic location makes it ideal for short stays or transits. The city lies close to Negombo, with its golden beaches, Dutch canals, and vibrant fishing culture, just a 15-minute drive away. Colombo, the island’s commercial capital, is also easily reached via the Colombo–Katunayake Expressway in under an hour. For nature lovers, the nearby Muthurajawela Marsh offers boat safaris through wetlands rich in birdlife, while cultural travelers can explore temples and markets scattered around Negombo and Colombo.

In essence, Katunayake is less about being a destination and more about being a starting point. It offers convenience, good connectivity, and proximity to beach resorts, cultural landmarks, and the urban heart of Sri Lanka, making it an important stop in any travel plan.
